Extreme Makeover: Home Edition coming to San Bernardino County

Building Industry Association Baldy View Chapter selected to assist Extreme Makeover with recruiting vital partners on the construction of a new home for a deserving family

Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. (January 19, 2009)— The Building Industry Association (BIA) Baldy View Chapter announced today that the award-winning and very popular television program Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is coming to San Bernardino County.

The BIA Baldy View Chapter, a non-profit trade association with approximately 500 members, will assist in recruiting builders, subcontractors and suppliers to participate in the demolition of an old home and construction of a new home for one deserving family.

“We are looking forward to participating in the program and the excitement it will generate among our membership and residents in the region,” said Scott Coler, BIA Baldy View Chapter president.  “Our motto is ‘making the American dream come true one family at a time,’ and if we are to make this dream happen we will need the generous support of our members and the community at large.”

The construction of the new home is set to take place in just seven days with each day representing what would normally be a month of work in a typical home construction schedule.

Five deserving Inland Empire families are being considered, but only one lucky family will be surprised when Ty Pennington, team leader of the show, and his design team knock on their front door on January 31.

This will be the first time Extreme Makeover: Home Edition has been to Southern California since 2006 and the second time in the Inland Empire.

A coalition of regional builders and suppliers has stepped forward to donate their time and materials to make this project a reality.  They include, Murphy Construction Company from Hesperia, SC Homes, Inc. from Newport Beach, Steeno Design Studio from Hesperia, and David L. Manwarren Corporation from Rancho Cucamonga.

Although each company surely has many reasons for being involved in the show and “the build”, the theme of giving back to the community in some way was at the top of all of their minds.  “This is a chance as a successful builder to give of what we do, building a home for a deserving family from our family owned business,” said Scott Cross, President of SC homes.  Tom Murphy of Murphy Construction sounded a similar note, “My family has been blessed by our success in the construction business in good times and now that times are not so good I think it is a great time to give something from our family and our business.”  The principal designer and architect behind the project Thomas Steeno added, “We could all use some good news and a chance to feel good about ourselves and our community of friends, neighbors and business partners and this was my way of contributing to that good news and good feeling.”

The BIA is still recruiting volunteers for the following labor and materials: a closet company; concrete stain material and installers; 20 carpenters; crane company; chain link fencing suppliers and installers; 10 cleaning companies; exterior doors; electrical material; wood burning fireplace; 50 framers; HVAC material/units; insulation material and 20 insulation installers; landscape materials and plants; lumber supplier; 20 masons; 30 painters; 20 plumbers; rough plumbing materials; protective floor covering material;  roof truss company, roofing materials and 15 roofers; sheetrock materials and 50 sheetrock labors; siding material and 30 siding labors; stucco material and 20 stucco contractors; tilling material; windows and 10 window installers.

“We are delighted by the eagerness of the BIA Baldy View Chapter’s members to join us on this awesome undertaking,” said EMHE Senior Producer Diane Korman. “This amazing process will accomplish in roughly one week what takes six months in the most ideal construction schedule.”

The members of the BIA have all participated in building hundreds of thousands of homes, but none of them have ever experienced anything like this challenge. “This is going to be a unique challenge for our members in that they must build the house in seven days and all products and labor must be donated, “said BIA Baldy View Chapter CEO Frank Williams.  “But I know our members and I’m confident they will rise to the occasion.”
