There is manpower to recruit and supplies to find before one lucky Inland Empire family finds itself with a new home. ABC's "Extreme Home Makeover" will team with the Rancho Cucamonga-based Baldy View Chapter of the Building Industry Association to encourage area builders, subcontractors and suppliers to participate in the demolition of an old home and construction of a new one. This season, "Extreme Home Makeover" is concentrating on heroes - inspirational families that are making a difference in their own communities.
On Jan. 31, one area family will get that life-changing knock on the door, with construction beginning two days later. Though the Baldy View chapter has many willing volunteers waiting to roll up their sleeves, more are sought.
"Even though times are bad, builders have stepped up to help a deserving family," said Frank Williams, CEO of the chapter. "But we're still in need. We're asking the trades to step forward with supplies and manpower to help build this house." Those interested may register online at www.biabuild.com and come to a volunteer rally today in Victorville. The build goes from Feb. 2 through 6. The shows typically air about six weeks after the build's completion. "Critics said that no one will watch a reality show that makes people feel good," said Conrad Ricketts, one of the show's executive producers. Those naysayers missed the mark as "Extreme Home Makeover" is in the midst of its sixth season and 140th build.
"People come to a build thinking they will change a family's life, but they come and change their own," Ricketts said. "We build these homes in 106 hours, something that seems impossible, but volunteers come together and make the impossible happen for someone else and realize they can make the impossible happen for themselves."
